DCWS and VHWSG Joint Meeting Antics

The Deep Cove Weavers and Spinners hosted the annual meeting with the Victoria Handweavers' and Spinners Guild on Thursday May21st.  Over 50 people participated, enjoying each others company and of course the amazing food.   The evening began with the unveiling of the "Duds to Diamonds" Challenge.  A slide show of the before  'duds' was presented then the creator of the finished product 'diamonds' spoke about the transformation process.   The stories were interesting and our ability to laugh at ourselves was contagious.  Laughter IS good for the soul!
After the unveiling we took a break to enjoy the appetizers and think about our favourite 'Duds to Diamonds'.  The Prize Winners......................
1st Prize Lee: Valentine's Vest from many scarves

2nd Prize: Anita Salmon's Diaper Bag converted from a Baby Sling

3rd Prize:  Elaine Drader's Vest of Many Colours
from handwoven fabric that was much to pretty to be a table cloth

After the Prizes were presented we were moved on to our 'Show & Tell' event.  A feast of colour and more stories!

Pickup and May Delights

Our Guild was delighted to have Alison Irwin as our guest speaker in April.  She had examples of various types of 'pickup' weave structures  as well as amazing 'paper' weaving.

Several members attended an afternoon workshop during which Alison taught 'Mock' Satin Damask on 4-shaft looms.  A great afternoon and there are a few 'works in progress' of the samplers.  We look forward to the seeing finished projects in the future.

Members are busy getting ready for our annual Joint Meeting with the Victoria Guild (VHGWS), during which we will unveil items from the "Duds to Diamonds" challenge.   As well as preparing for various Studio Tours and Arts Shows on the Saanich Peninsula.

In the meantime we had our monthly 'Show & Tell" for May.  Here are a few delights from that meeting.
