A Passion for Buttons

The DCWS Guild was pleased to have Jean Betts as our guest speaker for April.  Jean brought along a wonderful display from her rather extensive collection of buttons.  The collection included:  antique buttons; buttons made from metal & bone; buttons covered in silk, fabrics, various threads, yarns and cords - many of which were handcrafted by Jean herself.

A particular favourite was the Dorest button.  Jean described in detail how to handcraft a Dorset button, starting with a small plastic ring.  The ring is covered in a blanket stitch with thread, then a small 'warp' is created on the inside of the button.  Intricate designs are woven through the 'warp' threads in the centre to create unique button.  For a tutorial on how to make this type of button, visit: www.craftstylish.com and search - Dorset Buttons.

Jean is an accomplished weaver, dyer and also harbours a passion for buttons.  If you would like to learn more about Jean Betts and her interests - visit her blog at:  www.onesmallstitch.wordpress.com
